Labor forgets local community by not delivering on Reid Highway overpass promise

The Rudd Labor Government has turned its back on the local community, by failing to fund an overpass at the Alexander Drive and Reid Highway intersection in the recent Budget.

The unsuccessful Labor candidate, on behalf of an elected Rudd Government, promised unconditional funding through Auslink 2 for the building of an overpass at this intersection – and for a consideration of the Mirrabooka Avenue and Reid Highway overpass project.

Hundreds of local families have already signed my online petition to see these overpasses built, and during the campaign I secured $20 million to fund the Mirrabooka Avenue and Alexander Drive overpasses at Reid Highway.

I think the local community will be very disappointed with a Labor Government that pledged to fund this project – and then months later went back on that promise.

I will continue to fight for both of these important projects, which will save lives.

The Rudd Labor Government and the WA Labor Government are out of excuses with their commitments to road safety projects at Reid Highway – overpasses at Alexander Drive AND Mirrabooka Avenue.

They need to provide the funding now to start work on these important projects.

WA Labor said in 2004 and again in 2005 that Mirrabooka Avenue was the worst black spot in Western Australia and promised to do something about it. Then, they said it was Alexander Drive – and yet nothing has been done.

I think they should just get on with the job and construct both of these overpasses for the community. People don’t want excuses and they don’t want delays – they want to see both important road safety projects get underway.

Labor’s lack of action is a disgrace – and I won’t stop fighting to make our local roads safer. I will continue to push for the Alexander Drive and Mirrabooka Avenue overpasses at Reid Highway because there is only one outcome that is acceptable, and that is to get these vital road safety projects BUILT. Please complete my online petition to keep up the pressure on Labor.
